Mark Making
Mark Making is so important for young children. It is not just about children drawing lines and scribbles. When young children are making messy shapes it is so easy to see them as just messy scrawls.
Yet nothing could be further from the truth because from these initial messy scribbles a child learns how to write. Consequently, mark making needs to be actively encouraged because the skill of writing begins with this first step. Writing is a learned skill which takes both practise and time to get right.
The benefits to young children
- young children begin to express their ideas creatively
- drawing skills are practised and improved
- enables creativity
- promotes good hand to eye coordination and develops small motor skills
As a child’s mark making is perfected they will grow in confidence and because of this their willingness to try new ideas is increased. Hand to eye coordination is also improved as children decide what grip they prefer and experiment with the results they see.
As children start formal learning their efforts during this phase will ensure they already have some element of writing ability. This means that they will already be in a position to hold a pencil to write letters, numbers and other ‘marks. All of which add to increased literacy ability as they progress through the early school years.
This range of mark making products provides the ideal perfect introduction to children embarking on that life long journey of learning in a fun interactive manner.
