When we think of kids dens we are invariably taken back to our own childhood. Dens assembled on the spur of the moment by a blanket pinned across the front porch or makeshift boxes and duvet covers thrown together at the bottom of the garden. Whatever the den was made from, and wherever it was, it was a place of secrecy, somewhere to sit and observe the world alone or with friends.
Kids dens provide a sanctuary where children can learn that being alone doesn’t mean being lonely. They provide a different play stimulus to the swings, roundabouts and slides found in the school playground or park. Dens can be a haven for children who want quiet, who want simply to lie on their backs with their feet in the doorway, watching the clouds scuttle by. To sit in silence to observe the birds in the trees and the small insects in the grass. Yet they can also be noisy, active and industrious places too! The place where friends meet, plans are made, schemes plotted and secret pacts and code words conjured and agreed.
Kids dens and indoor tents for children play an intrinsic part in children’s development and participation of creative role play. Children can run all manner of businesses from the inside of a den, creating the badges and dealing with the paperwork that become part of the game, each child taking on a particular role. Children can play happily for hours in such environments, sharing thoughts and dreams between each other that are not for parent or grown up ears. If someone says they want to be an astronaut or a famous actress there is no one to laugh or pass comment.
For dens to have an open side for observation of the world prevents pirates or parents from sneaking up unexpectedly. Yet with a roof and three closed sides they provide a space for children to rest and rejuvenate, to confide in one another, to learn intimacy and experience anonymity.
These play sessions help form characters of the adults these children will grow up to become. As adults we treasure the happy nostalgic memories and look back on our time making and playing in dens with fondness.
