Encouraging a child to ride a tricycle is a great way of helping them develop balance and coordination across various parts of their body. They have to learn to pedal and steer at the same time which also helps them to understand how different parts of their bodies perform different things. It is the first step towards them having the confidence and sufficient gross and fine motor skills to progress onto a bike. Trikes allow toddlers to hone several motor skills at once. They begin to develop a sense of independence as they learn to push the pedals themselves, generating enough power to move their trike unaided.
Trikes can be used by an individual whilst others allow 2 children on together. These trikes help to engender collaborative play as the children take it in turns to pedal and be the passenger. They also provide encouragement and reassurance to less confident children to join in and have a go.
