Competition – Make a Halloween Lantern – 2015

Halloween lanterns come in all different shapes and sizes and can be made from any manner of materials. Traditional lanterns are made from Pumpkins where the insides of the Pumpkin are scooped out and a face or decorative pattern is carved into the outer skin.  Lanterns can also be made from mason jars which can be decorated with images of Halloween.

You can also make a lantern using card, crepe paper and coloured film. Whatever your lantern is made from, it can be lit from the inside with an electric candle and put on a windowsill, or hung from a tree to add a bright colourful addition to the dark nights of autumn. Below are some ideas to help you design a mason jar lantern.

What you’ll need:

  • Mason Jars
  • Tissue / crepe paper
  • Glue
  • Paint
  • Ribbon
  • Black Card
  • Scissors

Instructions

Start by cutting the tissue paper into strips, about 1 inch thick. Brush a thin layer of glue on the outside of your mason jar and stick the tissue paper to it. Work a strip at a time until you have covered the whole of the jar. Leave to dry.

While the jars are drying you can begin making your faces by cutting them out of the black card. When the jars are dry you can stick the faces onto the front.  Tie some ribbon around the top of the jar for final decoration. They look lovely on the windowsill with just the sunlight coming through. Or you can put an artificial tea light inside. (Note: Use artificial rather than real tea lights as the jars can become hot).

Or for something different you could try making a ghostly mason jar.

What you’ll need:

  • Mason jar
  • White gauze or lint
  • Twigs
  • A piece of foam or cotton wool
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Black pen

Instructions

Unscrew the lid of your mason jar. Put some glue on the inside and stick a circular piece of Styrofoam or some cotton wool to it.  Leave to dry.

Next, choose a twig, ideally one with a few small branches coming off it. Put a blob of glue onto the cotton wool and attach the twig to it. Or push the twig into the Styrofoam so it stands up.

Take a ball of cotton wool and wrap some gauze over it, leaving some gauze to hang down. Using your black marker pen, make two eyes. Stick the cotton wool ball into one of the branches.  Use moss or leaves to cover the base and screw the jar onto the lid.
